Crab Canapes
INGREDIENTS
6 ounces imitation crabmeat
1 tablespoon thinly sliced green onion
1 cup shredded Swiss cheese
1/2 cup mayonnaise
1/4 teaspoon curry powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon lemon juice
1 (8 ounce) can refrigerated dinner roll dough

DIRECTIONS
Preheat oven to 400 degrees F (205 degrees C). Lightly grease a baking sheet.
In a medium bowl, combine the crabmeat, green onions, cheese, mayonnaise, curry powder, salt and lemon juice. Mix well.
Separate each refrigerator roll into three layers, making 36 pieces total. Place the pieces on the prepared baking sheet. Spoon a small amount of the crabmeat mixture onto each pieces of dough.
Bake at 400 degrees F (205 degrees C) for 12 minutes, until puffed and brown. Serve hot.

The goal for any cartoonist is to see your work in print. Whether itÂ’s in a magazine or newspapers, thereÂ’s nothing quite like having your efforts validated by a real, by-gosh genuine cartoon editor. My first published cartoon was in a nationally published magazine. It only paid me 25 bucks, but the value of being a published cartoonist was incalculable! HereÂ’s a quick primer on how to prepare a single-panel cartoon for submission.

Neat Drawing

Once you have worked out the details in your brainstorming session, you need to transfer your drawing to a clean sheet of 8 ½ x 11 inch sheet of paper. Regular printer paper is fine – as long as it’s clean. Don’t get cutesy with the size of the paper or the color. Bigger paper is a pain for editors who have to pour through lots of submissions, and submitting your work on brightly-colored fluorescent paper will NOT make it stand out – at least not in a good way. It screams amateur and will get it thrown in the trash.

I will often transfer the drawings straight out of my sketchpad onto printer paper via a light box. I like this process because it preserves the spontaneity and comical whimsy of the sketch which is sometimes lost when a piece is overworked in an attempt to make it “perfect”.

Using a Light Box

You can get a light box at your local craft store for next to nothing, or you can go to the internet and look up plans for building your own. Simply tape the cartoon rough in place and then tape your clean sheet of paper over top. Turn on the light and you can clearly see the original through the paper. Transfer the drawing using a black pen. This also eliminates the need for erasing pencil marks which can leave your work messy.

Don’t worry about drawing the border around your cartoon. The editor will do that if they need one – often they don’t.

The ArtistÂ’s Market

You can find lots of publications that accept freelance cartoon submissions by looking through a current edition of The Artist and Graphic DesignerÂ’s Market. This book contains lists of magazines and what they pay, as well as the names of editors and submission details. Study them and then submit accordingly. This is important because different magazines require different things. Some have a minimum number of cartoons that you have to meet; many list things they are looking for as well as things they donÂ’t want to see.

Mail ‘em Out

Once you have your submission packet ready, it’s time to send them in. Most publications ask that you send in copies of your originals. Just make sure that you send them in on decent quality paper – not the thin paper most public libraries use. Each packet will require two manila envelopes: one for the packet itself, and another that you will put your own address and postage on. This is commonly called the SASE (Self Addressed Stamped Envelope) and is a courtesy you offer the editor so he/she can conveniently send back your artwork (along with a check for any they decided to buy!). Don’t worry about any kind of cover letter – they know what a submission packet is for, and your cartoons will speak for themselves.

Once youÂ’ve sent the packet in, itÂ’s time to get started on the next set of submissions. Keep doing this week after week and youÂ’ll eventually get that first sale!

There are many different types of kids bedding that is gender neutral, from everything such as a color scheme to characters, to animal themes. At the same time, though, there are many that are very gender specific.

Girls have many different choices for what types of kids bedding they may want. A good theme for girls that can start at an early age is princesses, and girls will usually like this one for a long time. The same goes with flowers and pastel or pinks and purples.

Boys have the equivalent in sports themes and things like camouflage. In this area, it can be one specific sport, such as football, or a more generalized theme that involves all sports. This works well, because they may change their minds on their favorite sport within a matter of months, or even weeks, and feel very adamantly about their favorite sport. Colors tend to be darker and brighter most of the time in boysÂ’ rooms, so it is usually the same, or similar, when it comes to the kids bedding choices for them.

The many gender neutral types can be such things as cartoon themes, certain animals, etc. especially when they are younger, as in babies or toddlers, it can be a lot easier to find gender neutral themes as opposed to gender specific. One of the reasons for this is that small children tend to not care quite as much about colors being a certain way and care more about characters or animals, and these all tend to be the same. This is especially true with nurseries, because so many times a person doesnÂ’t find out what the sex of the baby will be before itÂ’s born, or they do, but the sonogram is wrong, or they are concerned with it possibly being wrong. Many parents tend to go with neutral bedding so that they wonÂ’t have to worry about this if it happens to them. Luckily, with babies, no one cares that a little boyÂ’s room is done in light greens and yellows, but when they get older their friends might tend to make fun of them if this were still the case.

Girls have an option that boys donÂ’t have as they get older, and this is to have a canopy bed, with the curtains hanging on the rods above. For a girl, this would seem like they have the bed of a princess, but for a boy, they would feel like they were a girl in a bed like this. There are daybeds, as well, which are typically not a boyÂ’s favorite type of bed. There are many different types of toddler beds as well, such as racecar beds, and for girls there are princess beds and more. Toddler beds are always made slightly differently than regular beds, so you will want to make sure the kids bedding is specifically made for that type of bed, as well as pick bedding to match it.

There are bunk beds of many different types that a child may have, as well. This includes the kind with a twin bed on bottom, or it could be a full size, or even a futon. Each of these bed options leads to more options in bedding for them, because there are different types of sheets, and other bedding items that are specifically made for most types of bunk beds, so that they fit better than a regular sheet would.

So, there are many things about boy kids bedding that is similar to girl kids bedding, but there are also many differences, and these are always a good thing to keep in mind when purchasing bedding for a child.

In 1938, the world was just getting close to inventing a fountain pen that met its needs for utility and neatness. In that same year, a Hungarian journalist named Laszlo Biro introduced the world’s first ballpoint pen. This started a war between the hard-fought and established reputation of fountain pens as the accepted writing utensil and these new-fangled ballpoint pens that seemed too good to possibly be true.

Biro appreciated the fact that the ink used at the printing press dried quickly, eliminating the need for time-consuming drying processes. He also noticed that this thicker ink was smudge-free. Slow drying times and smudging were the two most significant problems experienced by people using fountain pens. The fountain variety also was in the middle of a long bout of research and development for an ink reservoir that didn’t need to be filled constantly. Biro wanted to create a pen that used this printing press ink and have no need for continuous refilling.

Since this thicker ink would not flow from the nibs (tips) of fountain pens, Biro needed a new type of point for his pen. He experimented with a tiny ball bearing. He placed it in the tip of his pen. When the pen was moved on paper, the ink was rolled out by the rotating action of this ball bearing. He had known of a similar invention by John J Loud in 1888 used for marking leather. Loud’s invention never flew due to commercial exploitation of his desired patent. In turn, Biro obtained a copyright for the world’s first ballpoint pen in 1938.

The British government bought the licensing rights from Biro because they needed a pen that would work for their Air Force at higher altitudes than a fountain pen was capable of. They would use the sales of these new pens to fuel the war effort. (It’s funny to note that flight was so much further advanced than ink pens!) Biro had neglected to obtain an American patent for his pen and he and his brother emigrated to Argentina. Thus began the war of patents for the ballpoint pen across the globe.

Here’s an interesting time line to describe it:

1884: First working fountain pen patented by L.E. Waterman, a New York City insurance salesman.

The fountain pen becomes the world’s chosen writing instrument for the next 60 years.

1938: The Eterpen Company in Argentina commercializes the ballpoint pen invented by Biro.

The press loves the ballpoint pen. It can write for a year without refilling!

June, 1945: Milton Reynolds, a Chicago businessman visits Buenos Aires. He buys a Biro pen and loves it. He returns to America and begins the Reynolds International Pen Company – ignoring International patent rights.

October, 1945: Reynold’s product, the Reynold’s Rocket, is an immediate success. It sells $100,000 worth on its first day at market. The price was $12.50 per unit!

1950: A Frenchman, Baron Bich begins selling Bic ballpoint pens.

1951: Reynolds folds. His pens were not living up to their advertising claims. Fountain pens regain favor.

1954: Parker introduces the “Jotter”. It works well. Parker sells three and a half million Jotters at $8.75 in less than a year.

Late 1950s: Bic captures 70% of the European market for ballpoints.

1960: Bic dominates the ballpoint market and begins selling his pens to the US market for 29 – 69 cents per pen.

Today: The equivalent of Biro’s pen, the Bic Crystal, sells 14,000,000 pens worldwide on a daily basis! They can write the equivalent of a five-mile-long line before running out of ink. The ballpoint pen continues to be the world’s first choice for their writing needs.

The world of pens has certainly come a long way since the times of quill pens and quill pens were the only choice for writing for over 1000 years!

Question: In an experiment, people read how funny they thought cartoons were while holding a pen crosswise in their mouths. Those who held the pen in that teeth thought this cartoons were funnier than did people who held the pen in their lips. Can you explain why?

Natural pearls are hugely expensive – some as much as hundreds of dollars for just one pearl! That’s fairly expensive for a ring but what if you were buying enough for a necklace? Now you’re looking at, most likely, over a thousand dollars minimum. When you’re making that kind of investment, it’s important to be sure of what you are buying. One easy way to know is the name: faux, fake, artificial, synthetic, man made – if you see these in the description you’ll know right away. There may be cases though, where you may not be able to tell so easily, and that is where these six tests will come in handy!

Density is one way to check for authenticity. If you are able to see the pearl(s) in person, try picking them up! Real pearls should be fairly heavy for their size. This is because they will have a thick layer of nacre whereas most fakes will be glass with a few coats of mother of pearl on top. Very light pearls are automatically fake – however, this gets a little trickier when they are heavy, as cultured pearls, well made synthetic pearls, and natural pearls will be much closer in weight and density.

The next test is to try exposing your pearls to sunlight. You can also use a bright indoor light. What you should do is pick up the pearl and look at it with your back to the light. First of all, you’re checking for the luster – you should be able to almost see your reflection if the quality is high. Secondly, this will let you see all the color variations. This is easier when you are checking multiple pearls against each other. Natural pearls will not match each other exactly unless they are quite costly.

If you’re still not sure, try the tooth test. A lot of gemologists seem to recommend this but I don’t have any experience with it so be careful. This involves running the pearl very lightly over your teeth. Real pearls should feel fairly gritty, while fakes should feel much smoother. This is because the nacre wasn’t formed naturally. The problem with this test is that it will separate natural, non-cultivated pearls from fakes but won’t separate fakes from cultured pearls, as they have a thin layer of nacre.

You could also try some form of destructive test. I don’t recommend these at all but I feel I should include them for completion’s sake. Destructive tests involve cutting the pearl open so you can take a look at the core. You will be able to tell how much nacre there is, and if the core is made of glass, you have a fake on your hands. Obviously this is a last resort – I can’t see any reason why I would want to destroy something so valuable, myself.

Magnification will let you see the surface of the pearl in greater detail. Synthetic pearls will be more smooth. Natural or cultured pearls will have ridges or slight imperfections that may or may not be visible to the naked eye.

Finally, you can have your pearls x-rayed. This is the most reliable test you can perform. You will need a (certified) gemologist to take a look. Once done he/she will be able to tell you everything you need to know including whether the pearl is natural uncultured, cultured, or fake, as well as the thickness of the nacre. If you have any doubts at all after the previous tests, this is your best bet. It’s well worth the cost when you think of how much money you could lose.

In summary, the six ways to spot fake pearls are checking density, the sunlight test, tooth test, destructive test(s), magnification, and x-rays. Please remember that it is important to contact a gemologist if you still have doubts. There are some very well-crafted synthetic pearls on the market (Swarovski comes to mind) that pride themselves on being as close to nature as possible. I am helping my friend redo her bathroom. She doesn’t have money for a new counter top, so I want to do a faux marble finish on it. The counter top is your average man-made fake stuff. I want to make sure I use the right type of products that will be durable, that won’t chip, and waterproof of course. I like the faux white marble finish with grey veins in it.

I did lots of research on exactly this project.
But first, heres how I made a fuax-stone desktop
Got a 6 foot white formica countertop from hardware store for $35. I used acrylic paint I had laying around, sponged on various colors in ong streaks, working fast while its all wet. Then used a fake plant with lots of end, dipped it in black paint, and ran it across the whole thing. Then varnished 3 coats (I used glossy). Its now absolutely gorgeous desk and everyone loves it.

So I explored doing it to a kitchen, and here’s what I found. First,the technique works fine, but you’d have to prime the shiny/smooth formicas. The problem is in finishing them.

Regular varnish is toxic so you don’t want it around food. There is a product called ‘salad bowl varnish’ ( or something like that), used to finish wooden kitchenware. Its non toxic and can get wet. This was the best choice I found.

The guy I talked to said it is NOT impervious to staining, and you’d not want standing water on it. So you’d get away with it if your’e good about cleaining up. I think this would be the same in a bathroom. I think it would take some time to ruin it…my desk came out pretty sturdy!

There is actually a wood crafting store (I’m in chicago) and they specialized in finishes like varnish. And there is a lady on ebay that makes stencils, who’s picture library includes how to create a faux marble counter top. She gives you step by step instructions and its beautiful. Her shop on ebay is ‘victorysprings’ and she’s really good about answering questions.

Ultra violet free tanning or self tanning which is also known as sunless tanning is a process in which chemicals are applied on the skin to produce an outcome similar in look to a conventional suntan. This process is known as fake tan. During the 1960s it was discovered that there is a link between skin cancer and exposure to the sun which resulted in the growth of fake tan.

Dihydroxyaceton (DHA) is the dynamic component in the sunless or self tanning lotions available in the market. DHA is not paint or a stain or a dye which produces the tan. The chemical reaction between DHA and amino acids in the dead layer on the surface of the skin causes the skin to tan. This chemical reaction is similar to the browning process during the manufacturing process of food. Fake tan obtained with the use of sunless or self tanning lotions does not involve any pigmentation of skin and there is no need for exposure to ultra violet rays. The chemical reaction obtained with the use of DHA is not toxic and does not harm the skin. It does not cause any damage to the skin whereas exposure to UV sometimes causes damage to it. The fake tan has a very short term effect and will change gradually over a week’s period.

In some people the chemical Dihydroxyacetone in the sunless tanning lotion might cause skin problems so it is better to apply the lotion to a small patch of skin. If no adverse reaction in the skin is noticed within 24 hours than it can be applied all over the body to get a fake tan.

if I only see right direction arrow at the bottom of the No parking sign, does it mean that it is legal to park at the left hand side of the sign even if it is close to the intersection of the road?

If there are two no parking signs with an arrow on each that points to the other, there is no parking between the two signs. If you are close to an intersection, and there is no parking space lined out on the road, you probably shouldn’t park there unless you are into paying fines for parking where you shouldn’t. Also look at curb color if any, that will give you some indication. If it’s RED, that means no parking.

Contrary to public opinion, rent is not one of the top 5 considerations when evaluating a property or a space for your retail business. True, it is an important factor but without consideration given to the 5 items below, even a rent-free location could be a losing proposition.

1. Location: The old adage, Location, Location, Location is still true but retailers today must take this one step further. A great location means different things to different retailers. This can be daytime population (businesses & employees), residential population (commonly known as rooftops) or both. A strong location is one that is visible (regularly) to the types of customer that you want to attract. For example, a location that is close to a residential population that has many young working families may be a good location in which to consider opening a day care business. A daytime population that has a lot of white collar employment in a ½ mile radius may be a good location in which to open a casual restaurant that specializes in lunch and dinner. The “right” demographics are different for every retailer.

3. Ingress & Egress: A strong retail location MUST have easy access from the major streets servicing the property. In the retail world you don’t want to have what is known in the industry as a “Statue of Liberty” location, meaning one that is extremely visible but next to impossible to access. We all know that consumers are lazy. If given the choice a customer will favor one retailer over another (goods & service being relatively equal) simply because it is easier to drive in and out of the property’s parking lot. This is a fact and you can see its effect on retailers all over your city if you look hard enough. Make certain that the location you choose has good access.

4. Signage: A visible sign is very important to all retailers. If your customer can’t see your business how can they shop there? A well located, visible sign that identifies your business is critical to your success. On the flip side, many retailers think that monument or pylon signs are a necessity. This is only partly true. If you are an “anchor-tenant” and are able to erect a sign that is large enough to see from at least 1-2 blocks away, a monument or pylon sign will be helpful. Otherwise, traffic moves at such speed and there are so many visual displays competing for the motorist’s attention that a minor position on a multi-tenant sign will do little to draw traffic into your business. You are better off taking the time to evaluate the type, size and visibility afforded your storefront sign and base your signage decision from this perspective.

5. Parking: Depending on the type of retail business and the type of location you are seeking (urban vs. suburban), parking will be part of your decision making process. This includes off-street parking (parking lots), on-street parking, fee-based parking (garages or metered) and the number of available spaces easily accessible to your business. If you locate next to a restaurant be prepared to see spaces in front of your business used for their overflow parking at peak times. If you are located next to a doctor’s office or health club, be aware that their customers will park for a minimum of 30 minutes. All of these factors can and will affect your customer’s ability to park close to your business.

There are many factors to consider when searching for the right location for your retail business. The 5 mentioned in this article must be at the top of your list and be carefully reviewed before signing a lease or buying a property. Sometimes, I go to chinese buffets and they have french fries, cheeseburgers, jello, ice cream, chicken fingers, and fish sticks. However, the chinese food that they have usually sucks. It taste like cheap fake chinese food deep fried and fully of MSG. Has only else ran into this experience with fake chinese food. I think they be doin to much and can’t even get their own food right. It’s like saying that Olive Garden is real Italian food or that Taco Bell is real Mexican food.

Buffets can be viewed as all you can eat fast food. Dishes sit out on the steam table and continue to cook, deep fried so it’s easier and quicker to prepare. Dumplings are mushy, the soup is goopy… etc.

Depending upon the size of the buffet… only 10 to 15% comes close to “real” Chinese food (the stir fried dishes), but those are best when fresh. Have you seen brocolli beef that’s been on the steam table after an hour? It becomes salty brocolli jerky with beef jerky!

Don’t get me wrong. I enjoy going to the buffets, but twice a year is good enough for me.
