After a long and hard day of work, many busy parents arrive at home to face their “second” job: parenting. Without much of a breather, we shift into Mommy and Daddy mode, preparing a meal, helping with homework and/or spending quality time with our kids, and squeezing in house-hold tasks between family interactions. Often the reward at the end of this full day is the opportunity to cajole, threaten, yell and finally join the bedtime drama.

Of course, not all kids and parents have issues at bedtime. But if you are one of those parents who would like to make bedtime less traumatic, it might help to understand why your kids fight bedtime and what you can do to help them without tears or frustration.

#1 Get REAL about who is in charge. Parents are infamous for using the word “cooperation”. Cooperation includes “co” and “operation”, suggesting that the parties are equal partners in the task. The word implies that each is a willing participant.

Setting an arbitrary and unacceptable bed-time (from the child’s viewpoint) does not have any resemblance to “cooperation”; it is a directive from the powerful parent. Children seldom feel they have a choice or a voice setting the in-bed deadline.

What to do: Setting Bedtime IS a parent’s prerogative – kids don’t get to vote. But you can give them an opportunity to have a voice and choice about what happens just prior to turning off the light. For example: you can ask your child whether he would like to read a book or play a quiet game before lights-out. Or you can let your child choose from two different pre-bedtime snacks.

The point is to reframe the child’s sense of no-option into partnering on choices you are willing to offer. A kid who doesn’t feel over-powered doesn’t need to push back!

#2 Accept the nature of the “beastie”. Even when kids are exhausted, many will fight bedtime right up until the moment they collapse. WHY?

Kids have a natural tendency to live-in-the-moment. For them every moment is dedicated to activity and fun. They often see bedtime as a limiter – no more fun! And, for some if they can keep Mom and Dad busily involved in them, the on-going fun might be worth the potential parental outburst they suspect might occur. Hey, maybe even the outburst is entertaining in its own perverse way – from a kid’s viewpoint.

What to do: plan a natural slow-down as the kid approaches the bedtime deadline. Establish a routine starting about 30 minutes before bedtime that de-escalates the “fun”. Turn off the excitement of the TV; get away from the computer games; take time to quietly chat during bath time; read a restful story; slow-it-down. The more positive involvement they get with you, the more they’ll take your lead in preparing the quiet gentleness of bedtime affection and a good-night kiss!

#3 Allow that your child might be frightened by being alone – but don’t act too impressed. Some kids genuinely sense that they become invisible when their parents aren’t actively engaged with them. Their solution might be to ask for “another glass of water”, “one more good-night kiss”, or another “closet” check for monsters.

This pattern of just-one-more-thing becomes its own reward. When parents comply, the kid is likely to try a few more requests. Finally, the parent catches on and gets annoyed, irritated and could even rev up to being angry. Uproar at this stage of the ritual totally undermines the kid’s slow-down-toward-sleep progression.

What to do: Expect and prepare in advance for your kid’s usual 2-3 delay tactics. Get the issues handled before the kid gets into bed. You might even encourage your child to handle the issues with you, like team-members. Then starting with your own version of “I’ll be turning the lights out in 10 minutes”, engage in a quiet 10 minute in-bed conversation – keep the tone restful and relaxed. Give your child 3-4 warning notices during your chat, to avoid an abrupt departure. Then depart! If your child still requires interaction, do not go into the room – talk to him/her from the door. And if your child gets out of bed, supportively (but firmly!) instruct him/her to get back into bed and say a friendly (but firm!) “good-night”.

Every kid is unique. Every parent-child relationship is unique. No advice for ANY parent-child situation is going to work for EVERY family. However, the key to successful and satisfying bedtime rituals is to KNOW your child’s needs and potential motives. And when the goin’-gets-rough, go-’n'-get more information.

The laws of each state specify conditions for writing a last will and testament. Under old common law there used to be a separate writing disposing of real property (real estate) called ‘testament’, and a separate writing disposing of all other property called ‘will’. Hence the archaic phrase ‘last will and testament’.

Because wills are documents to survive after their testators, the laws are very strict as to what should be or not be regarded as wills, as well as their proper implementation. Take the example of Alabama. The state stipulates that the maker of the will must be above 18 years of age. He must be of sound mind and he must be free from improper influences. As to how a will must be made it is stated that the will must be written, must be signed, and witnessed in a special manner provided by the Law. A person can change his will as many times as he pleases either by executing a new will or by adding a legal amendment called as a Codicil which has to be carefully made. Professional legal advice must be sought if. You find the State Laws complicated.

The law comes to play especially when a person dies intestate. In Alabama, for example, if a person with a wife and 2 children dies, leaving $100,000 without a will, then the spouse will receive the first $50,000 in property value plus one half of the balance of the estate, and the children will receive one fourth of the balance of the estate. Similarly, if there is no will, the personÂ’s administrator cannot carry on the business of the deceased without approval from the court. If there are minor children (under 19), the court may appoint a guardian. Since the person has not named an executor, the state will appoint one to take care of the estate.

Some states recognize holographic wills which are completely handwritten personalized documents of persons caught in emergency situations. A holographic will need not be witnessed but a proof of handwriting must be produced in the court during probate proceedings.

If the will is not holographic and is printed it is required that the testator must sign it in the presence of at least two witnesses (three in some states like New Hampshire). To avoid future contesting of wills, it must be declared that the testator is of sound mind and free from undue influence from any quarter. The Law is also common to all states that the witnesses to the will cannot be named as beneficiaries in the will.

The law also allows for a person to change his will according to the changing circumstances in his life. He may marry, have a new child, get a windfall profit, etc. Revoking earlier bills and executing new one can bring changes. Or, codicils can be added to the existing will, which makes amendments, deletions and additions. A witnessed will can even be amended by a holographic codicil.

The laws of each state differ slightly in their formation and implication. But basic laws in all states follow the above patterns.

The primary purpose of tears is to clean and lubricate the eyes.

Tears are secreted from the lacrimal glands through ducts to the surface of the eyes between the eyeball and the lid.

The lacrimal gland, one for each eye, is located at the back of the top eyelid. When we blink, tears known as lacrimal fluid, are distributed over the eye surface.

The lower eyelids have minute orifices called puncta on their margins and bottom corner that collect tears and pass them down to the inner nose.

This is the reason that the nose runs if there is an excess of tears caused for example by crying, laughter or peeling onions.

As the flow of tears increase so the eyes flood as the puncta cannot cope and the excess of tears run down the cheeks.

It is important that the eye surface (cornea) is kept continually moist and nourished by tear fluid which at the same time washes away any dust or other small foreign particles that are virtually a constant in our modern world.

Another important function of tear fluid is to fight any bacterial infection that can attack the eyes.

Tears consist of water, mucin, lipids, lysozyme, lactoferrin, lipocalin, immunoglobulins, glucose, urea, sodium and potassium.

Tears form three distinct coatings on the eye surface, each having a specific and important function in normal circumstances. This coating or film is known as the precorneal film.

The outer layer or lipid layer is responsible for preventing the surface from drying out by forming a hydrophobic barrier to slow down evaporation. At the same time this barrier retains the tears from running onto the cheeks.

The middle layer, known as the aqueous layer, fights infections and assists in spreading the tear film over the eye surface.

The inner or mucous layer function as the water-bonding layer that is responsible for even distribution of all three layers over the eye surface. It also contains mucus that helps to protect the cornea.

Healthy tear production is essential for eye health. The older we are the less tears we produce.

Curiously and very misleading is the fact that although the eyes are watering profusely, we can still be suffering from a lack of healthy tear fluid over the entire surface of the eyes.

Should this be occurring without any noticeable cause do go and see your eye consultant to have it checked out. Ignoring the symptoms, which may not appear constant, can lead to sight problems.

Depending on the sufferer’s condition, ophthalmologists can provide either a cure or hold the condition in check. The inner puncta sometimes blocks but can be restored to normal bylaser treatment.

Insufficient or thin tear fluid levels have caused problems to contact wearerswearers but modern technology has largely overcome this problem as contacts have become more flexible, disposable or oxygen permeable.

The reddish/brownish marks on the inside corner just below the eyes of our dogs we all know as tear stains. You see them most often on light-colored fur, which makes the tear stains more visible. As the name “tear stains” suggests, they are caused by an overflow of tears that react with normal bacteria found on the skin which produces the darkened color. A common culprit that produces the esthetically unpleasing tear stain is an organism known as Ptyrosporin or Red Yeast.

Genetics, Health, Allergies, Water, Diet, Fleas, Bacterial and Ear Infections

Low-grade bacterial infections in the tear ducts can be the cause of excess tearing and staining along with other possibilities related to genetics, health, allergies, diet, fleas, and even ear infections.

In small dogs, it isn’t altogether rare that the lower tear ducts are closed off. A surgical procedure to have them opened could possibly be needed.

Hair Falling Into the Eyes Causes Irritation and Infection

Pay special attention to make sure the hair around your dog’s face is not falling into its eyes, which can cause irritation and infection. Equal attention should be paid to be sure soap does not become an irritation when bathing.

Water

Water in many areas has high mineral levels. On light-colored fur this can be evidenced by an entire beard and face being stained. Purified or bottled water can help to remedy this.

Diet

Diet is another area that plays a role in tear staining. Not only for tear stains but for the health of your dog, you should be feeding a natural diet with no additives, preservatives or food coloring.

Fleas, Ear Mites and Infection

Fleas can also be a source of tear stains. Fleas require moisture to survive and the tears are a perfect source of that moisture. This can cause irritation along with staining from the flea dirt which is flea feces consisting of digested blood. Along with the fleas comes the associated problem of ear mites that are carried by the fleas. Ear mites can cause painful ear infections, besides the tears stains, and should be addressed immediately by your veterinarian.

Caution Suggests You Refrain From Using Home Formulas

Dog tear stain home remedies do exist, using mixtures of milk of magnesia, corn starch, bleach, hydrogen peroxide, boric acid and lemon juice. Kids have to practice handwriting on special handwriting paper. Teaching them on a normal notebook paper will lead to confusion. On handwriting paper every letter or number is written within a character spacer line. Writing lines act as a guide – they help the child to write the letter with the correct height, width and length. Another important thing is the spacing between letters and spacing between words. The spacing has to be consistent through out. Initially they could space two words by measuring the space between words with their small finger. When a child gets comfortable with the sizing of the letters and spacing them correctly they can make the transition from the handwriting paper to a normal notebook paper.

Once we have the handwriting paper sorted the next thing to focus on is the right way to practice each alphabet. As an adult we sometimes tend to forget how hard writing alphabets can be for kids. We need to teach them to write each alphabet the right way. Good handwriting worksheets will have numbers and arrows on each alphabet. There are usually three numbers on each alphabet. ‘1? is where you start from – so the child starts at ‘1? and goes along the direction of the arrow. And then the child goes to ‘2? and moves along the direction of the arrow next to ‘2?. And then finally the child goes to ‘3? and moves along the direction of the arrow next to ‘3?

Next step is to practice, practice and practice. Make it a fun exercise. Don’t practice for too long every day. This will make children too tired and bored and as a result they might not look forward to the next handwriting practice session. Oversee your children’s work. How quickly they finish the exercise is not important. More important is how well they are writing each alphabet. Sit with them when they are practicing. Your involvement will make it more fun for them.

A good pencil grip is extremely important. If a child has incorrect pencil grip then correct them. The pencil should be positioned so that there is equal pressure between the thumb, the side of the middle finger and the tip of the index finger.

If your child has problem with smudging with pencil then use a harder lead pencil (a higher number for your lead pencil).

If your child is left handed then small changes to paper position will help them to learn good handwriting skills. There are special products specifically designed for left handed children. You should consider using them and it will make the whole learning process much easier.

Be patient with your children. Learning handwriting is not an easy task. It takes time, effort and a lot of practice. Encourage your children. Praise their achievements. In time they will master perfect handwriting.

And finally never ever compare one child’s handwriting with another. Every child will learn good handwriting skills in their own time. As long they are practicing the alphabets regularly and learning handwriting skills the right way they will all become masters in their own time.

Have you ever wondered why each of us has different handwriting? Handwriting, also known as brain writing, is as individual to the person as fingerprints. Occupations, relationships, personal problems as well as health related issues can be identified in a person’s writing. Analyzing handwriting goes back to the 1600s and originated in Europe. Confucius is quoted as saying “beware of a man whose writing sways like a reed in the wind”.

Ok, you ask, so what traits can be found while analyzing handwriting? Many traits can be shown provided the writing is in cursive, because printing has some limitations. Cursive provides the analyst with the upstrokes in writing which are very important.

Many personality traits including being outgoing, temper, anger towards the opposite sex, sexual deviations, generosity, broadmindedness, lying nature and hundreds more can be found when analyzing handwriting.

Handwriting does have limitations. Handwriting cannot tell the writer’s gender, whether they are left or right handed, their age or their race. It also cannot tell the future or the past.

Handwriting is very interesting because not only can you change your personality and watch your writing change as well, but also the reverse is true! Sometimes there are personality traits that we wish we did not have, but we didn’t know how to get rid of them. One way to change your personality is to use handwriting therapy, also known as graphotherapy. The person learns how to change their writing to rid themselves of unwanted traits, and practices this under the watchful eye of a trained graphologist. Handwriting analysis is becoming a recognized part of therapy.

Children may even benefit from having their handwriting analyzed, which must be analyzed differently than an adult’s writing. May be a child has a problem concentrating at school, or seems to show anger, or they tend not to catch on as quickly as other children. These issues can be dealt with successfully using graphotherapy.

Analyzing handwriting has many different facets. For instance, it is used in the court of law when dealing with document forgery. Companies are beginning to hire handwriting analysts to assist them in finding the right person for the right job. This is because handwriting analysis is a science – it is not guesswork. It is used as a tool to determine the compatibility of an individual to the requirements of a job as well as the compatibility of one individual to another.

All in all, handwriting analysis is very interesting and has endless possibilities. Next time you see someone’s signature or handwriting, you now know that this person’s personality is right out there in front of you, just waiting to be discovered !

This is much like asking: “Is Medicine or Psychology scientific?” The answer is: “Some aspects are very scientific and some are not. As well, some practitioners are more competent than others. Also, some aspects of Psychology involve projective techniques (e.g. the Rorschach Inkblot test) which rely heavily on the skill of the practitioner and do not easily stand up to “hard core” validation measures. They can, nevertheless, be accepted as scientific if they meet the criteria of global or holistic validation.

As to handwriting analysis, The International Graphoanalysis Society has had a research department since 1929 and, in its publication: An Annotated Bibliography of Studies in Handwriting Analysis Research, revised 1985, Dr. James C. Crumbaugh (Mississippi Psychologist of the Year, 1989), summarizes approximately 240 studies bearing on various aspects of graphology. Dr. Crumbaugh points out that these studies comprise less than two percent of studies conducted on this science and he considers these to be the most serious studies conducted by scholars and published in respected publications.

Dr. Crumbaugh, in a reprint entitled: Graphoanalytic Cues, originally published in The Encyclopedia of Clinical Assessment, volume 11, 1980, points to studies that: “seem to be the most effective in demonstrating a scientific basis for the assumption that handwriting can be as valid in personality assessment as the other major projective techniques.” He further points out that a number of psychologists, psychiatrists and other physicians have taken training in handwriting analysis and that, in Germany, many universities require training in Graphology as part of their Ph.D. programme in Psychology.

So yes, aspects of handwriting analysis can be scientific. The Graphoanalytic system appears to satisfy the tests of global and holistic validation, and studies are continuing to demonstrate this. Other schools of graphology may or may not be scientific but, undeniably, this field is catching the attention and gaining the respect of the scientific community.

Today, handwriting analysis is the subject of much scientific investigation with dozens, if not hundreds of studies being conducted and published annually, many of them by serious scholars.
