Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet, Christiaan Karel Appel, an exponent of ‘Abstract Expressionism,’ was born to Jan Appel, a Dutch barber, and Johanna Chevalier in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on April 25, 1921. Appel started showing penchant towards painting at a young age of fourteen. Appreciating his passion and zeal to learn painting, his affluent uncle, Karel Chevalier, gifted him a painting gear on his fifteenth birthday. During 1940-43, the artist studied at Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. In 1946, his first-ever solo exhibition was held at Het Beerenhuis in Groningen, the Netherlands, and he keenly participated at the Jonge Schilder’s exhibition too, at the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam.

Starting as an affiliate of the Nederlandse Experimentele Groep, Karel Appel displayed a typical non-representational and non-objective style of ‘Abstract Art’ in his painting. His paintings have always been an explicit expression of the hysterical barbaric world represented by flamboyant and the loud choices of colors. His brush strokes create an impression of an artist slapping his canvas with color using brushes and small knife. Highly inspired initially by Pablo Picasso & Henri Matisse and later on by Jean Dubuffet, Karel Appel was one of the key founders of the experimental group called, COBRAS movement, which believed in emoting rage through its art. Founded in 1948, the COBRA movement was a group of ‘abstract’ painters (such as Appel, Constant, Corneille, and many others), who wanted to break loose from the conventional norms of art.

In 1949, Karel Appel’s public image took a beating due to a severe controversy sparked by his creation of a frieze titled, “Questioning Children” for a restaurant in the City Hall of Amsterdam. This controversial debate lasted for a decade, eventually forcing him to leave Holland for Paris in 1950. In Paris, the author, Hugo Claus introduced Karel to Michel Tapia. It was this friendship with Tapia, which got him the platform to organize and exhibit his work in France. In 1953, the success of his solo show at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels became a feather on his cap. He was awarded the UNESCO accolade at the Venice Biennale of 1954, and was appointed to carry out a fresco for the restaurant of the Stedelijk Museum in the year 1956. Rewards and recognition followed him in profusion. The subsequent year, he also claimed a graphics honor at the Ljubljana Biennial in Yugoslavia. In 1959, he was honored with an International Prize for Painting at the São Paulo Bienal.

Karel’s some of the most distinguished works include “Questioning Children, 1948;” “Little Moon Men, 1946;” “Hip Hip Hoorah, 1949;” “Horse and Flute Player, 1951;” and “Amorous Dance, 1955.” Appel left no stone unturned in preserving, prop up, and exhibiting his oeuvre. He also set up Karel Appel Foundation, which took charge of creating awareness and handling publications of his entire opus. Karel Appel lost his life to a severe heart ailment on May 3, 2006 at Zurich, Switzerland. He was cremated at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.

Firstly, the single most importand thing when you want to promote a concert is to start delegating duties and make sure helpers know

what’s expected of them.

So let’s start!

[Flyers and Posters]

It’s importand to have a well designed, eye-catching flyer or poster. It will show people that the concert deserves their anticipation,

time and money.

The artist’s management may provide you with some flyers or posters to start with.

If you prefer to create your own flyer or poster, you should find a graphics professional or pronting company willing to donate

services in exchange for advertising..

If it’s the first time the artist is coming to your town or city be sure to include a testimonial on the flyer or poster. A flyer that simple

advertises an artist or a band will mean nothing to someone who has never heard of them!

Assign volunteers to post the flyers in places likely to attract the most attention. Try grocery stores, local chamber of Commerce

offices, Art Councils or other communities, malls, shoping plazas, music stores, book stores, galleries and other popular gathering

spots where flyers are displayed routinely but be sure to ask for permission before posting.

Do not forget to post the flyers or posters to the concert location itself! Try to hang posters as close to the average eye level as possible..

[Media and other sources of publicity]

List the concert in community calendars, Newspaper, Magazines or radio and TV stations if possible. Radio and Tv stations may be

willing to anounce events for free.

Be sure to notice them many weeks in advance. In the listing include the date of the concert, time, location, ticket price, ticket outlets,

sponsors of course and phone numbers for information.

Ask promotional material from the artist’s managementslike interviews, video clips, song samples, photographs etc. Try to deliver the

material to the media along with the news release anouncing the concert.

Make sure you follow up by phone. Ask from the management to arrange an interview with the artist(s) if possible. Discuss other

possibilities.

Provide artist’s promo material (if available) to radio stations likely to air it. Encourage them to play it often especially a week or two

before the concert. Have volunteers and friends telephone the stations and request more..!

If you are using an answering machine make a recording using sound clips from the artist. Advertise the phone numbers available to call

in newspapaer or on the radio. Include a short message in the recordings detailing concert info.

When you are online, subscribe to any music-related newsgroups or bulletin boards. Post messages about your anticipation, plans and

later, show specific information! Of course if you own a website, consider creating a special area to advertise the concert with a hot-link

to the artist’s home page (if any).

Ask from the media to co-sponsor (sharing in work or revenues) or to endorse the concert for publicity purposes. If they say ‘YES’

then make sure you include a ‘..co-sponsored by..’ message in the flyers and other promotional material..

I’m not sure as far as what schools have the best pre-med programs, they’re pretty general (I’m a pre-med major) but, go to school, if you can, that has a medical school. I think schools tend to lean toward their own to let in before outsiders. That doesn’t mean slack, you still have to do great, but they prefer more so their own students and in state first

CHRISTMAS cannot come fast enough for Dryblower. Not because he craves the idea of unwrapping presents under a tree, or indulging in too much food and booze, but because the annual holiday season will break the circuit of gloom which pervades the global mining industry.

Last week was, hopefully, as bad as it gets. Not only did Dryblower’s horse come last in the Melbourne Cup, but the news flow from mine fields around the world was awful.

Whether it was made better, or worse, by the election of a Democrat as the next US president remains to be seen.

Barack Obama has the credentials to pull America out of its recession by launching national infrastructure re-building schemes, which will boost demand for minerals and metals. That is the good long-term news. In the short term not much will change, and might even get worse, as the US Titanic tries to dodge an economic iceberg.

As well as Mr Obama’s acceptance of the modern-day version of Mission Impossible there is a glimmer of hope contained in the speed at which events are happening.

This might be wishful thinking, but there is something to be said for getting the bad news out quickly so the repair phase can start, and last week produced a classic rollcall of the failed, postponed, delayed, and the mothballed.

It actually happened so quickly that most of Dryblower’s readers were probably so busy watching the Cup and the US election that they missed the astonishing flow of news, which was certainly not confined to Australia.

In Canada, an already long list of mine closures and construction delays saw the addition of Thompson Creek Metals postponing its Davidson molybdenum project, Birch Mountain Resources slipping into insolvency, HudBay Minerals canning its Fenix nickel project in Guatemala, and Tahera Diamond failing to sell its Jericho mine in Nunavet.

In Zimbabwe, Metallon Gold closed five mines because the country’s Reserve Bank has failed to pay for gold compulsorily delivered to it – a case of government theft of the first order.

In Peru, Inca Pacific delayed its Magistral copper and molybdenum project, along with two proposed iron ore mines of Strike Resources.

In Venezuela, the rotten government of that country has seized control of the Las Cristinas gold mine from its Canadian owner, Crystallex.

In Russia, the country’s richest man, Oleg Deripaska, has been forced to cancel the float of his Strikeforce Mining and seek a government financial bailout.

The list goes on, with Dryblower’s readers hardly needing reminding that it is longest of all in Australia where companies such as Fortescue, Mt Gibson, Consolidated Minerals, Alliance Resources, CBH Resources, Dragon Mining, Brockman and Stonehenge Metals put assets on ice last week.

It might be a slight exaggeration but if last week’s pace of closure and delay was kept up for a month there would be a global shortage of mothballs.

The silver lining, if it is possible to imagine one at such a grim time, is that the speed of events means that most of the damage should be done by Christmas – hence the Dryblower’s wish that we get there a.s.a.p.

After Christmas we have a checklist of important dates, and as we clear each one the future becomes a little clearer.

New Year will come and go with most of Dryblower’s readers still suffering a modern-day version of shell shock. Then comes the January 20 inauguration of Mr Obama, followed by a whirlwind of changes to US policies.

As these critical dates come and go the financial pump-priming started last month by the governments of the western world will start to have an effect on industry.

Funds will make their way out of rescued banks into the hands of consumers. Asset price falls will stabilise. Bargain hunters will re-enter the stock market. Orders for new equipment will start to flow, slowly at first, but flow they will because the equipment will be needed and because it will carry a financing interest rate tag reading 0%.

The great unknown, and the one which is causing the greatest worry, is how long the downturn will last, and that is where there might be some good news.

There is now such a global effort to kick-start economic activity with vast amounts of government money being thrown at the banks, and with interest rates tumbling, the recovery reaction could be as sharp as the collapse.

But, to find that out we must first get to Christmas, then to the New Year, then to Mr Obama’s swearing in – and then (and only then) will we know what 2009 will really look like.

Designs for poster printing can really be hard to think of, especially if you have done a lot of jobs to print posters. With the poster printing business saturated by professional and amateur designers alike, almost every kind of design that you think of may seem like it has been done before. So, when everything seems so mundane and boring lately in terms of your poster designs, it is probably time to get wild and creative with your posters. We have combed through the Internet and found these wild but effective poster design ideas that you may want to try out.

Ultra-Violet Paints – One amazing idea that we saw is the use of ultra-violet or “black light” paints. These are the paints that capture ultraviolet light and then reflect them off as visible light to us. So, they basically “glow” when ultraviolet light hits them. This can produce an eerie aura into the paint, making it ideal for special purposes. Posters can actually take advantage of this type of paint as a good supplementary part of its design. If you are sure that there will be some “black lights” in the area where you will be placing the poster, you can maximize its effect by placing UV paints unto you posters. Most people use this for Halloween posters, or gothic themed, horror type poster concepts.

Take note though that this is not standard practice for poster printing, so you might need to pay extra, when you print posters with these types of paint.

Metallic Inks – Next are the metallic inks. Metallic inks differ from ultra violet paints in the way they shine or glow. While UV paints need a black light, metallic paints usually have a natural sheen of glitter to them as they make contact with natural or standard artificial light. These kinds of color poster ink usually imbibe a nice regal elegance to a poster design that is perfect for classic type layouts. Some poster printing services have the ability to add Metallic inks to their designs just for a small additional fee. Not all printers though have this skill so it is good to inquire first before really committing to the printer.

Collage/Scrapbook Posters – Another kind of alternative poster design is the 3d collage or scrapbook poster. This is basically involves pasting or attaching other 3 dimensional elements into a poster so that it gets noticed more. By using adhesives to add beads, twine, leaves, coins and other materials into a poster, designers can create a nice scrapbook poster type design with real three dimensional objects. Those objects are a good and noticeable feature on the poster which will make it more memorable for the reader. Typically no poster printing service offers actual pasting of additional elements to a poster, so you may more or less have to do this technique yourself.

Holographic Poster – Also, another good idea is to use holographic posters. Hologram creation has already surpassed most people’s exceptions and it is always been a hit with people. They enjoy moving their eyes around while seeing a two dimensional image look 3D. Of course not all printing services can do this, and you may need to look for a special printing service that can print posters with holographic designs. In some cases, a totally different firm must handle the 3d work. It might be expensive but it will be eye catching so if you can, try it out.

Puzzle Posters – Lastly we have puzzle posters. These are the kinds of posters that test a reader’s skills by presenting a puzzle. Once the message or puzzle is decoded, you will then receive the point or main topic of the poster. This type of posters is a good way to engage readers and capture their attention. Hello all. Can anybody give me any ideas for a poster for the topic above?

What kind of conference are you going to? The conferences I am familiar with are the ones where you present your own data on a poster in order to facilitate discussions with colleges.
Why are you making this poster? What do you want to achieve with it?
If you are supposed to research the subject and present what you have learned on a poster, then I would suggest to do exactly that. You could start out at google scholar and type your title in and look what you come up with. I put one link which came up in here, you do the rest.
I also know there is quite a number of studies out there which deal with the use of different brain areas for the first versus second language and how that can change over time.

Experts in child development often say that parents are the first educators. And, whether parents elect to traditionally educate their children or dedicate a significant portion of their own time, effort, and resources to homeschool their children, the simple truth is that parents can, should, and do begin educating their children long before they introduce any sort of formal education.

Many parents, especially new and homeschooling parents, hesitate to “push” a child into reading before they are “ready.” However, reading is merely a visual representation of the spoken word. And, just as we teach our children to talk and the appropriate words for objects and people, we can begin early to teach our children how letters (i.e., symbols) represent certain sounds, and when those letter symbols are grouped, they form words. This natural education process is less “pushing” than it is simple language acquisition. Some educators and experts refer to this process as pre-reading.

Pre-reading Leads to Reading Success

Pre-reading activities begin early and most parents aren’t even aware they are preparing their young children to read. Parents might sing the alphabet song to help a cranky baby get to sleep. A child’s bedroom or playroom might be festooned with an ABC border. Vibrant letter magnets could adorn the refrigerator enabling parents and children to form words. These (apparently) unusual activities are what prepare children to learn to read.

Pre-reading is really all about exposing the child to both spoken and written language. Parents can set their children up for success without pushing by making sure that they have the maximum exposure to these activities. Technology has even given children a new opportunity for early learning called syllabics. Syllabics, which focuses on the sounds associated with all letters, or phonics, which deals mainly with the sounds associated with the consonants, can be easily learned with readily available preschool computer software.

Pre-reading, Games, and Conversation

Even before children learn to talk, parents naturally set them up for verbal communication. How many times have we all witnessed parents who talk to their children while dressing them? That parent might say something like “Here’s your pretty pink dress!” or “Would you like to wear the red shirt or the green one?” Those parents who talk often with their children long before the kids can hold up their own end of the conversation are, almost stealthily, teaching their children pre-reading skills.

Another way young children learn pre-reading skills is through exposure to those well-recognized early reader board books. These books, made from thick cardboard and easy for less-than-nimble fingers to manipulate have simple, colorful pictures and short, basic words. They help pre-readers learn to associate words with objects and people in a different way than they were learning when they held an object in their hands while mom or dad told them what that object was or when they began learning that people had names and titles.

Measuring Pre-reading Success

The success of a parent’s pre-reading instruction can actually be measured. In general, children who have had lots of pre-reading activity exposure begin speaking earlier than children who have not. Consider that research indicates that parents who speak to their children often seem to have kids who begin to speak at an earlier age. Parents who limit how much they speak to their very young children might notice that those children are “late” talkers.

Children learn quickly and naturally, given the opportunity. And, although parents might be hesitant to push their children into learning, they must also understand that it is their responsibility to give their children the tools they need to develop the proper pre-reading skills. Providing children with fun and interesting ways to develop language skills is very different from requiring a minimum number of formal teaching hours for pre-reading children. An important scenario is to focus on learning fun. The second might be more along the lines of the “pushing” that parents are trying to avoid. Knowing the difference between the two can set the stage for reading success.
