Dutch painter, sculptor, and poet, Christiaan Karel Appel, an exponent of ‘Abstract Expressionism,’ was born to Jan Appel, a Dutch barber, and Johanna Chevalier in Amsterdam, Netherlands, on April 25, 1921. Appel started showing penchant towards painting at a young age of fourteen. Appreciating his passion and zeal to learn painting, his affluent uncle, Karel Chevalier, gifted him a painting gear on his fifteenth birthday. During 1940-43, the artist studied at Rijksakademie, Amsterdam. In 1946, his first-ever solo exhibition was held at Het Beerenhuis in Groningen, the Netherlands, and he keenly participated at the Jonge Schilder’s exhibition too, at the Stedelijk Museum of Amsterdam.

Starting as an affiliate of the Nederlandse Experimentele Groep, Karel Appel displayed a typical non-representational and non-objective style of ‘Abstract Art’ in his painting. His paintings have always been an explicit expression of the hysterical barbaric world represented by flamboyant and the loud choices of colors. His brush strokes create an impression of an artist slapping his canvas with color using brushes and small knife. Highly inspired initially by Pablo Picasso & Henri Matisse and later on by Jean Dubuffet, Karel Appel was one of the key founders of the experimental group called, COBRAS movement, which believed in emoting rage through its art. Founded in 1948, the COBRA movement was a group of ‘abstract’ painters (such as Appel, Constant, Corneille, and many others), who wanted to break loose from the conventional norms of art.

In 1949, Karel Appel’s public image took a beating due to a severe controversy sparked by his creation of a frieze titled, “Questioning Children” for a restaurant in the City Hall of Amsterdam. This controversial debate lasted for a decade, eventually forcing him to leave Holland for Paris in 1950. In Paris, the author, Hugo Claus introduced Karel to Michel Tapia. It was this friendship with Tapia, which got him the platform to organize and exhibit his work in France. In 1953, the success of his solo show at the Palais des Beaux-Arts in Brussels became a feather on his cap. He was awarded the UNESCO accolade at the Venice Biennale of 1954, and was appointed to carry out a fresco for the restaurant of the Stedelijk Museum in the year 1956. Rewards and recognition followed him in profusion. The subsequent year, he also claimed a graphics honor at the Ljubljana Biennial in Yugoslavia. In 1959, he was honored with an International Prize for Painting at the São Paulo Bienal.

Karel’s some of the most distinguished works include “Questioning Children, 1948;” “Little Moon Men, 1946;” “Hip Hip Hoorah, 1949;” “Horse and Flute Player, 1951;” and “Amorous Dance, 1955.” Appel left no stone unturned in preserving, prop up, and exhibiting his oeuvre. He also set up Karel Appel Foundation, which took charge of creating awareness and handling publications of his entire opus. Karel Appel lost his life to a severe heart ailment on May 3, 2006 at Zurich, Switzerland. He was cremated at Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris.
